Hallway Colour Drench and Woodwork Restoration

A large residential hallway refresh focused on correcting poor previous work, colour drenching the walls and ceilings, and restoring the timber details for a cleaner, warmer finish.

Hallway Colour Drench and Woodwork Restoration

The brief

This was a large hallway with very high walls and ceilings, a lot of woodwork, and a finish that had already been compromised by poor work from a previous decorator. The client wanted the space corrected properly rather than patched over, with a cleaner overall scheme and more considered treatment on the timber details.

The work

The main decorative direction was a full colour drench, carrying Dulux Summer Linen across both the walls and the ceiling so the hallway would feel softer, more cohesive, and more intentional from top to bottom. That kind of scheme only works when the prep is right, especially in a tall circulation space where uneven surfaces and rushed cutting-in show up immediately.

We first dealt with the issues left behind from the previous job, then carried out the level of preparation needed across the walls, ceilings, frames, and wider woodwork. The eight doors and their frames were then finished in the Valspar Premium range, colour matched to the Dulux Summer Linen tone so the full hallway read as one coordinated finish rather than separate elements.

One of the most noticeable changes came from the timber details. The black cappings were stripped back, sanded smooth, and refinished in an oak spirit stain before being protected with a natural varnish. That shifted the feel of the space completely, replacing a heavy dark element with a warmer timber finish that worked much better with the rest of the scheme.

The outcome

The finished hallway feels lighter, cleaner, and much more polished. More importantly, the quality is in the details: corrected prep, sharper woodwork, consistent colour through the space, and restored timber that now looks like a feature instead of an afterthought. The client's review reflects exactly the kind of job this was, with as much attention spent on care, cleanliness, and preparation as on the visible final coat.

We recently hired John to decorate our large hallway with very high walls and ceilings, and we couldn't be happier with the result. His extensive experience and expertise were immediately apparent, particularly as he had to correct a significant amount of poor work left by a previous decorator. He carried out an exceptional level of preparation, especially on the extensive woodwork, which includes eight doors and frames. He also stripped back dark paint from our wooden railings and restored them beautifully with a natural varnish, completely transforming their appearance. He was punctual, friendly, and extremely clean and tidy throughout the process, taking great care in our home and clearly taking pride in his work. The finish is excellent, and the hallway now looks fantastic. We would highly recommend him and would not hesitate to use him again for future work.
